Know Your Shoes : the Derby
Hugo Jacomet and Sonya Glyn Nicholson continue to discuss the different models of men’s shoes : their styles, origins, features, and how to wear them.
This episode focuses on one of the most popular style in contemporary footwear : the Derby.
I would argue, the Derby was popularized by ready to wear developments, e.g. in army footwear even before civilian use. My foot anatomy perfectly fits Oxfords as my ‘instep’ (foot anatomy) is not too high (and the toe arrangement is ‘Greek’). My brother has a rather high instep (that I call ‘German’ with ‘Roman’ toe anatomy). He will never wear Oxfords, unless bespoke, or have to travel to Germany and hope to be lucky.
For me, Oxfords. Why can’t they do a Stan Smith Oxford at Adidas (oh wait, they’re German).
So can I wear a blucher with a double breast suit?
Dear Hugo, I love jeans, please make a video on it. I like the normal ones, not the torn and distressed ones. Thanks in advance
Dear Hugo,I had been suffering from acute foot ache for a very long time.I visited the best Doctors and took the best medical treatment possible but the pain remained and was getting worse as time progressed. But all that is History thanks you and the knowledge I have gained about shoes from your blog.I changed my supermarket bought loafers to a pair of handmade Derby’s and my foot pain from the past 10 years has vanished.Thank you so much for this information. Wish u all the best
This guy’s a pretty cool cat.
Dead Hugo, what is the level of formality of double monk strap shoes? I think double strap is more formal than single strap. Sonya explained that the trend is growing stronger but I’m not sure in what way exactly. I see double monk straps with suits but I don’t know if it can be as formal as the oxford and the derby. Any advice?
@7:13 – I have double monk straps shoes in gray, black, ox blood, dark brown, tobacco, cognac, light camel brown. Also, I just acquired a pair chocolate suede and "medium/dark" patina double monks from Magnanni: people gasp at how beautiful they are. Shoe collecting is just too much fun.
Love your videos. Thank you for helping me dress better.
English pronunciation. Starting with explaining Durby (US) v. Darby (UK), helped. Then this ‘blootcher’ made me think ‘wtf?’ Ah, Von Blücher – now I get it. Remember in German the ü is pronounced as u in French. The ‘ch’ … hard to explain and needs practice.
He was right, Sonya. It was brilliant. I coulodn’t figure it out before. BTW. You’re a lucky guy. Sonya is so lovely & classy. Envious.

This one, great episode. I learned a lot about the Derby. I thought I have an Oxford but it’s actually a Derby shoes.
One of the most elegant and thorough explanations I’ve ever seen on the subject.

WOW
Your information sharing is priceless.
Man, I just love the two of you. Style advice without snobbery from two genuine masters. Bien joué!

Thanks for the review guys. Can shoe trees be used to widen the toe areas of shoes and boots?
you two are now officially my two favorite person in this classic world
I love watching these videos and Whisky Vault videos….both make you feel happy about the fine things in life.
By the way, "Derby" is actually pronounced as "Dar".
Just like Gloucester is pronounced "Gloster"
These are English names, not American, and thus should be pronounced the English way.
Sonya’s look at Hugo while he explains is priceless. I love you guys!
