I loved this video. I had the same idea and recently bought a pair of Allen Edmonds from ebay at a total cost of less than $30. The shoes arrived and are in splendid condition. The only problem, they don’t fit. Although they are factory marked as 10D they are much too small and seem to be no more than a size 9. Do Allen Edmonds shoes run small? I’ve never heard a mention of this.

Thank you for sharing your Ebay contact. I am (along with 10 million others) looking for a 10.5-11.0 medium AE Walnut Strands for my first practice project….

Thank you very much for these videos Preston, thank you for inspiring and influencing me to collect Quality branded shoes, and teaching me how to take care of them. I have learned a lot from you. Godbless you. 😊

Curious, how many pairs of dress shoes do you own?

  8. Loraine Spencer on May 16, 2020 at 2:53 am

Wouldn’t pre-owned shoes be fit to someone else’s foot?

  9. Michael Plopenio on May 16, 2020 at 2:56 am

Thanks for the tips. Great content as always. I have been wanting to get my first pair of Allen Edmonds for the longest time. Unfortunately, its too expensive to buy brand new and its quite difficult to find them in my size, preowned in my side of the world. By the way, I wear a size 12 regular-wide and I live in the Philippines. Really appreciate your videos. Please keep them coming.

"Altberg Mallerstang" Are the best footwear I’ve purchased in a long time, But I go more for a comfy boot, Some excellent names you’ve mentioned though, Which I’ll be checking out…

  11. Josef Y. on May 16, 2020 at 3:01 am

I have 4 pair of AE all pre owned and gave one pair to my brother after restoring. Total cost is less than 1 pair of new AE

  12. Tan K on May 16, 2020 at 3:01 am

I just began to go to thrift stores to look for shoes after binge-watching and being inspired by your videos. Now I have completely switched up my style from joggers and sneakers to jeans and a nice (well, used but with some TLC as shown in your videos) pair of leather shoes. I even raided my garage closet for some leather shoes my dad stored for a very long time just to rejuvenate those shoes. Scuffs? REJUVENATED. Minor to moderate wear and tear? REJUVENATED. It’s incredible how many shoes I’ve given life to again in the past 3 weeks because of this new skill I learned from you.

  13. Phil Schiavone on May 16, 2020 at 3:01 am

In my size, pre-owned are few and far between. AE seconds are my option.

  14. Daniel D on May 16, 2020 at 3:02 am

Wonder how hard it’d be to find a pair of size 14s? … 🥺

  15. Adam Duvick on May 16, 2020 at 3:05 am

  18. John Beasley on May 16, 2020 at 3:07 am

please consider a guide to shoe trees. let’s talk shoe trees, where to get them, what are the best shoe trees, both new and classic. some shoe trees look like junk and do not help "block" the shoes correctly.

  19. Grace on May 16, 2020 at 3:07 am

What can I do to Prevent fungal infections From used leather boots ? Thank you

  20. Michael Ruberton on May 16, 2020 at 3:08 am

Usually buy pre-owned in the very expensive class of shoe, Bruno Magli, Ferragamo Bally etc
Wise inspection with reliable seller and good cleaning and wax allows you to have a very comfortable pair of shoes. Let’s face it after ten feet we are all wearing used shoes.

  21. king-man Mak on May 16, 2020 at 3:08 am

    Preowned much cost effective

  22. Tabish Ali on May 16, 2020 at 3:09 am

  23. raksh9 on May 16, 2020 at 3:10 am

What amazes me us how you’re able to find shoes made in the 1930s! How have people not thrown out granddad’s shoes by the 2010s?

  24. Robert L. Merida on May 16, 2020 at 3:11 am

    Yes, pre-owned
    Save money and looking great

please how do I contact you? am from Nigeria

  27. Fred Patton on May 16, 2020 at 3:17 am

Right on! I’ve been doing this for years. Once I realized virtually any pair of Allen Edmonds in 10.5E would fit me beautifully, it was a no-brainer. I have several pairs of AE now, only two pairs of which were bought new. One of the used pairs were the Sheltons you show at around 3:00. 😀 I also have a couple of beautiful pairs of vintage Florsheim Imperial long wings, including the pebble-grain you show at the beginning. This is the only way to get these gorgeous shoes, as Florsheim is not what it once was, sadly. Cheers!

  28. Max Noerenberg on May 16, 2020 at 3:17 am

love those videos….and I even adapted your method of taking care of my shoes……..with the soaping and the leather balm with bare hands ( you can really feel how the balm / lotion gets absorbed into the leather ) and then the cream!

I usually used a generic petroleum based product but then I discovered the german brand Erdal…which seems similar to Saphir and it smells much better and fresher!

Have you ever tried this brand of conditioners and creams from ERDAL

  29. Zobby Zockbrecht on May 16, 2020 at 3:18 am

A few days ago, i bought a pair of preowned "Alt Wien" http://www.alt-wien.com/ in a really good condition for 22 €. I desinfected them inside, but what i’am asking myself, is how could i get some of the old sweat out of the shoes ? They aren’t stinky, but shurely the former owner has been sweated in the shoes 🙄😣 What would you do in my Case ?

  30. Yazza Yap on May 16, 2020 at 3:18 am

The benefit for me combines the 1st and 2nd point: I can save money AND get a pair of GYW! Shoes in Malaysia are crap (around $25-100), and GYW shoes are ($250 and above). So, as I wanna save money and get good shoes, the only way I can get them is through eBay. I don’t mind owning used shoes, just that they aren’t falling apart

  31. David Tornberg on May 16, 2020 at 3:21 am

Your content is excellent! I love it. Keep it up.

  32. Johnny Vichi on May 16, 2020 at 3:22 am

hello mister soto, which Last has the " roundest almond" toe shape for an allen edmond ? ( will be buying from dabondo ) i have one foot that’s " wider" than the other. I had an size 8 cornwallis allen edmond ( im a size 8) and man my right foot hurt as hell. i’m looking for boots now. thanks!

  33. Colima Beach on May 16, 2020 at 3:23 am

Hey Preston, just a tip from a fellow shoe enthusiast: use a little acetone to remove that annoying price stamp from the thrift store on your John C Roberts; it’ll b gone in seconds.

  34. DwightMS1 on May 16, 2020 at 3:23 am

I’d never buy a new car for the same reason, but wearing another man’s shoes would give me the creeps. It’s just psychological.

  35. Douglas N. on May 16, 2020 at 3:26 am

Thanks for the tip. I’ll check their site and give them a try. I have a pair of Allen Edmonds shoes that have given me years of great wear. They still look great.

  36. John Beasley on May 16, 2020 at 3:27 am

that day, when you realize you can only afford high quality shoe trees, and not the shoes…. a used Allen Edmonds belt that I would be ashamed to be seen wearing sells for $59 dollars on dabondo1. it reminds me of Charlie Chaplin the little tramp.

  37. mrarch on May 16, 2020 at 3:30 am

Outstanding as usual! I think many people feel that it is beneath them to buy ‘used’ shoes as though it was an intimate object and steeped in hygienic danger! LOL. I have recently experimented buying a used vintage pair of spectators in light brown and off white canvas inspired by your channel and Kirby Alison’s along with a few great cobbler restoration YouTube. For around $40 for the pair, new laces, new heel block pads and diligent and patient Saphir conditioning and polishing I find myself the proud owner of a unique pair of shoes in great restored shape for a fraction of the cost of sourcing a new pair out. I am now a believer and what a great way to save huge money and customizing your colors and shines, thanks for the inspiration.

  38. ussilov on May 16, 2020 at 3:30 am

Spyderco Delica, Tenacious? I see your good taste extends to your choice of steel 🙂 well done!

  39. Max Noerenberg on May 16, 2020 at 3:31 am

talking about those leather soles………do you use something to prepare those for the outside-street usage…..like a lotion or oil to put on the leather sole…

Because I have a great pair of leather shoes with new leather soles, but I am quite hesitant to use them for outside on the street with all the rain, mood and gravel.

  40. Timo Huitinga on May 16, 2020 at 3:32 am

    Dear Preston,

Thank you so much for your exquisite content. You have have instilled in me a lifelong passion for shoe care, that enables me to buy excellent pre-owned shoes at great value for money.

Keep it up, and thanks again.

  41. Cactus&Salad on May 16, 2020 at 3:34 am

Would totally get pre-loved ones! Any recommendations for womens shoes?

  42. Paul Goodier on May 16, 2020 at 3:34 am

After watching this video I would indeed buy preowned shoes…..Thank you

  43. Adam Soh on May 16, 2020 at 3:35 am

I would definitely buy pre-owned if they are super cheap! Nothing feels as good as restoring shoes and giving it new life.

  44. Jerry Berryhill on May 16, 2020 at 3:36 am

I bought 3 different style/color AE’s at Goodwill (most likely donated by the same person) they all looked to be worn very little with hardly any sole wear. I paid 4.00 a pair for them, I also picked up a 30+ year old pair of Bostonians that were as new condition the next day on half price day so those were 2.00, they are all shined and condition and look as good as my shoes that were full retail.

  45. Samuel Navarro on May 16, 2020 at 3:36 am

Since I started watching your channel I have rejuvenated two pairs of shoes purchase on eBay. I have also found a local cobbler to resole a pair of John Varvato Boots I purchase d for $20. Thank you!

  46. T H on May 16, 2020 at 3:38 am

    New $500, pre-owned $12 – big time pre-owned fan here!

  47. Dylan Obrien on May 16, 2020 at 3:39 am

After seeing The Elegant Oxford, I now have over 25 pairs of pre-owned shoes. I have re-conditioned them, dyed them and resolved them. I buy Loakes, Barker’s or churches and these shoes retail new from 200 – 300pound and I can pick them up of eBay for 20-50 pounds

  48. Mark Chiang on May 16, 2020 at 3:39 am

Hi. If the upper has start to lose their color. Even after putting on shoe cream. Is it possible to do mirror shine on it? Or do I have to dye the color back first. Thanks.

  49. Martin R. Guajardo on May 16, 2020 at 3:41 am

I would buy pre-owned if I can get them in the condition you get them in. But, I’ve never tried. Maybe now I will…

  50. Paul Timothy on May 16, 2020 at 3:41 am

I knew nothing about shoes a week ago. After watching your channel I’m suddenly obsessed, buying used Allen Edmonds and every saphir product needed to restore them. I hope the learning curve isn’t too big for me to handle when I try to apply the mirror gloss. Unfortunately, I bought shoes not knowing the difference between Oxfords and Derby’s. I’m sure the Derby’s will still look great.
