7 Types of Shoes to Wear With Shorts | Best Summer Shoes for Men

Ever wonder what shoes to wear with shorts? These 7 types of shoes are perfect for wearing with shorts, so you can pick your favorite 2-3 to be your go-to summer shoes.

Thanks to Thursday Boot Co. for supporting The Modest Man by sponsoring this video! Check out TBC’s new shoe collection right here: https://thursdayboots.com/

Here are the seven types of shoes we’re going to disciss, in order from least casual to most casual:

#1: 01:50 Loafers
#2: 02:40 Moccasins
#3: 03:40 Boat Shoes
#4: 04:43 Espadrilles
#5: 05:14 Sneakers
#6: 06:52 Sandals
#7: 07:02 Flip Flops

Any of these will work, but that doesn’t mean you have to own all of them. If you like the preppy look, for example, go with loafers and boat shoes. If you want to be more unique, opt for espadrilles and some cool sandals.

Save the flip flops for the pool, beach and gym shower. And no matter what, don’t wear socks with any type of sandals. With the other summer shoes (loafers, sneakers, etc.), you can choose between going barefoot or wearing low profile socks.

My favourite, especially with shorts: Barefoot. No shoes, no socks, no sandals. Perhaps an anklet or toe ring, but nothing else. The most casual, relaxed and liberating.

Can these shoes be worn with chinos in summer as well?

Huaraches are my go to shoe. I live in the Caribbean where it’s tropical weather all year round. They’re woven to let your feet breathe, provide the airiness of a sandal with the security of a closed-toe loafer.

  9. Don Sevilla on March 22, 2020 at 10:28 pm

they’re not called button up shirts though. they’re properly called button-down shirts. these came into popularity in the eighties with the "preppies".

Sandals should be at the top. And Birkenstock sandals were recommended by my chiropidist. They’re premium functional and classy; not a cheap shoe in terms of looks, function, and price. A good quality sandal can be worn anywhere shorts can be worn.

The only issue with sandals is mainly the person who wears them. They need to keep their feet looking not too cheap. This involves the necessity of basic hygiene, like keeping your toes trimmed, your calluses shorn, and a preemptive foot anti-persperet, because it’s hard to fake no-socks socks with sandals.

A good quality sandal offers style with warm weather comfort (your feet can feel the air).

Boat shoes are a classy casual second.

I’ll only comment that shorts are inherently casual, and yes they are generally regarded as work appropriate (I’ve worked for Microsoft, Sony, American Express, a small engineering firm, an auto parts factory, an oil refinery plant, security guard work, armed forces; in their head offices, etc… if it sounds like I can’t keep a stable job, then I’m either unemployable or easily bored), and even in sales, customer service, and other customer facing jobs.

The more elite jobs (like software development or classical electrical engenering; the more liberal the dress code. McDonald’s has a more stringent dress code than Microsoft.

Am I ranting? I guess. You bet! Nobody on Your Tube, whatever tube you are into. Nobody is going to dictate what shoes I wear! Except of course for Donald Trump, because he has the codes to launch nuclear missiles! And I don’t want my home on the target list!

Shorts & sandals r ok @ most businesses. Trust me.

  38. Iam Emo on March 22, 2020 at 11:05 pm

I guess the most important is you feel comfortable of what you wearing. Whatever it is.

  39. Fab🎃 on March 22, 2020 at 11:06 pm

What are some guidelines for wearing longer cut socks with shorts? I love wearing shorts but wearing them without socks looks too preppy and if you have skinny legs, you’re entering into flamboyant territory. Wearing black or navy crew socks adds and overall athletic aesthetic but I feel like there are guidelines to follow to really pull off the look.

  40. Nathan Hunt on March 22, 2020 at 11:07 pm

I like the look of Vans, but the pairs I’ve had seemed to fall apart pretty easily. Switched to plain Adidas.

  42. Anthony Cedeno on March 22, 2020 at 11:09 pm

I don’t get the sneakers and shirt thing, it doesn’t work, even for your friend with the Nikes. A polo shirt is as far as I’ll go in terms of formality when wearing sneakers.

Nice video and where I live it’s freezing cold most of the time so I only wear shorts on holidays abroad.
