Resort attire or resort wear is a dress code that is established around the globe. It’s even the basis for an annual collection of couture fashion designers who focus just on this segment because a lot of people want to look stylish even when they relax. You’ll most likely find it in the country clubs or nice resorts or hotels that want to make sure that guests don’t show up in board shorts for dinner. Sometimes the dress code resort wear can be ambiguous because different hotels or resorts define it differently. As a rule of thumb keep in mind the more posh or upscale an establishment is, the more formal the dress code is likely going to be.
So before I approach you with some ideas of what to wear when the dress code is resort casual, first let’s discuss what not to wear.
Athletic attire of any kind is always inappropriate. Your gym shorts, your t-shirts are not appropriate. That also means no track pants, no sweatpants, no joggers and no workout shorts. Avoid wearing t-shirts or tank tops and always make sure your shirts have some kind of a collar such as a polo shirt would be fine with short sleeves or long sleeves or a dress shirt. It also means don’t wear shower slides, flip-flops or sandals unless you’re specifically at the beach or by the pool area. You definitely want to avoid any type of tennis shoes or trainers. Definitely stay clear of black because that would be too formal. In some establishments, golf khakis or slacks with polo shirt are acceptable in a clubhouse. In others, they aren’t so it pays to specifically ask or figure out what the proper dress code at your venue is.
So what should you wear when it comes to resort casual during the day?
The first thing that probably comes to mind is the Hawaiian shirt. I’ve been to Hawaii recently and I hardly saw anybody wearing Hawaiian shirts. So they’re out there, they exist. They can be appropriate if you’re in the mood for it, go for it, but it’s definitely not something you have to have and sometimes it can also look a bit cheesy. So in terms of slacks, you can go with linen pants or cotton pants. Things like seersucker is totally fine and you can also go with shorts as long as they are longer and made of cotton or linen or other interesting materials. At the same time skip any kind of swim trunks or board shorts because that would be too informal. Try to keep with a shirt unless you’re at the pool or at the beach. A polo shirt is just fine during the day, a t-shirt maybe a little too informal but if you’re at the beach or in the vicinity that’s okay too. I say jackets are over-the-top and if you’re at a resort during offseason you may want to have a thin sweater or something that keeps you at the ideal temperature.
In terms of shoes you can wear driving mocs, maybe boat shoes. If you’re at the beach and you go from your room to the pool flip-flops are just fine.
So what does resort evening wear mean?
It means typical long sleeves, long pants, no more tailored shorts. It also means closed-toed shoes which can be your general derbies or oxfords in brown tones or tans. You can also be a little more playful maybe if you wanna go with a pair of spectators or maybe some white shoes. Something that is more summery and more associated with tropics. Stay clear of black shoes even in the evening because it’s not quite suited to the tropics. A jacket is not mandatory but definitely a good idea. Personally, I always like it because in the evening and can get a little cooler and it’s also much more elegant and stylish. A navy blazer is very versatile and you can wear it even though I think a cotton jacket such as the one I’m wearing here right now with a slight check, maybe a fresco jacket in a lighter color is preferable. If you want to you can wear a seersucker suit but in general, I’d stay clear of suits and rather go with combinations.

It’s a great video but I’m a little dissapointed that safari jackets were not mentioned.
I live on hawaii island. I can tell you that aloha shirts are worn almost 100% of the time (by white collared workers). I’m guessing you visited Oahu.
Try this in Norway
Could you do a Cruise version of this? In and out of the cruise on the island
nice video, but those red pants LOL.
red and brown don’t look good in my humble opinion
Raphael, You had a picture of the Hotel Del Coronado, You need to go there and have one of their Irish Coffees in the lobby.
Sven I am a big fan of yours, I really am, but the dress style has been over the top for a little while now and your cuts are becoming dated. The trousers you are wearing are very wide legged, classic, but really not what people are wearing these days. As well, the styles demonstrated in this video are not resort friendly they are quite franky over the top, similar to what people who are incorrectly dressed for The Hamptons. The looks are out of place and clownish. Traditionally you have been right on and I am saddened to see the content and style sliding lately and I hope to see some more great content. But please do not take what I have said the wrong way, again I say these things becuase I truly like your content but am concerned that recently you have been missing the mark.
Thanks for the foot picture! Just what I needed this fine morning. I shot my coke out of my nose and puked all over my seersucker jacket.
I’m still going to wear cufflinks in my shirt in the evenings because most of my dress shirts are double cuff Charles tyrwhitt
I’ve watched a lot of other men’s fashion channels but I always come back to yours … It’s the best!
Great video, thanks for the tips and insights!
First of all,have a resort😂
I’m just starting to get into gentelmens atier and you have been the biggest help in every way imaginable, from my arguments to my socks.
Where do you buy your polo shirts? Mine all have the ‘flimsy collar’ look at 7:11 – ok for the beach but doesn’t look right with a jacket etc.
Sven, great website and videos! QUESTION – What kind of hat/cap — other than a baseball cap — is good for Summer ware? I am in the U.S. and over 50 years old, fair skinned, bald on top and my doctor has diagnosed skin cancer up there (I use 50 UV Sun protection) but it is time to wear a hat all the time in the summer. Thanks!
At 2:22 what type of loafers are those, I’ve been looking for tassel loafers and can’t seem to find the style I like and those are exactly what I’ve been looking for.
Perfect timing
A lot of these options are not actually being worn by a vast, vast majority of people at resorts. I think it is difficult for people to be the only person dressed properly in any environment. Conformity is a real issue.
A vintage light/faded Hawaiian shirt goes well with a leather jacket(brown would be best) don’t know what pants would be best. I only know dark blue jeans go well with mine.
I’m yet to see some one wearing a 3 piece suit by the pool
Hey, I’ve got a question, however, it’s not related to this topic, but to shaving. Could you make a video about shaving brushes, please? I saw in another video and old Italian man saying that shaving brushes with pigs hairs (I believe) are the highest quality, but I’m interested to know in a high quality brush, but not too pricey and not too cheap either. Thank you in advance!
One word: Guayabera
Excellent job! Thank you for the info!
I have a question, my soon-to-be wife and I are going on a cruise as part of our honeymoon this summer. We will be cruising the Eastern Caribbean in early August. Does the info in this video apply, or are there different rules for cruising?
I like the red pants outfit you showcase at the end with the white shoes, but the cuffs on the pants seem way too wide vertically. Is that a Caribbean thing?
I disagree with some points.
1) I hate polo shirts. They look always sloppy and shabby. A crisp white t-shirt would be a better alternative. I’m sorry to say, but in those shorts/shirt combos you look like a typical North-European tourist anywhere in the world, and not especially stylish.
2) always wear a button down shirt with shorts. And roll up the sleeves. Short sleeve button downs… nah.
3) don’t wear shorts if you can avoid it. Light slacks, white linen trousers, that’s a stylish man’s choice.
4) never wear loafers without socks. And it’s a visual things, if you wear socks that can’t be easily seen, you aren’t wearing socks.
Also, only very light canvas plimsolls/sand shoes with laces can be worn without socks.
5) Sandals are totally fine. Always without socks.
6) colors, great, patterns… er… plaid and checkered look a little cheap. Makes me think of country.
7) No knit ties in the summer. That texture belongs to Autumn and Winter. I think all textured fabrics belong to Autumn and Winter. I want to see smooth, silky, water-like textures in the summer.
Good video, I find it difficult to dress smart in the summer.
Which kind of knot is that?
I’m doing golf for school and I was checking the videos out and without a doubt Sven has my back
I’m sorry but something about this guy makes me cringe
Thanks! This video comes right on time. Sven, as I am watching your videos I am asking myself whether there also is something similar to your channel but for the ladies? I would also like to have such an informative source for women’s wear. Now my husband looks much better dressed than I do 😉
Awesome video. Can we get a shoe collection video soon??
Do these outfits make it easier to get laid at a resort? They make you look like the typical nice guy. Can you give some edgy alternatives?
What a beautiful coat!
Good video, thanks.
I would like to see the gentleman’s gazette focus on Henley shirts a bit more and perhaps a video for the collarless shirt (as done with the polo guide)
I love sven when he explained the item’s that isnt appropriate with little of his wacky attitude… He looks cute
I love this channel! Just a thought: maybe lift some weights. It helps testosterone increase and maintain, and it can’t hurt your health. It may allow you to fit a different look entering a new stage of your life as well! Thanks for the great videos!
Can I wear a jacket with a polo shirt?
Do you think you can do the do’s and donts of showing tattoos? I have tattoos on my arms and stay covered at work even though it’s casual attire at work. I think maybe some of the younger guys could use this advice
This is the *first* time I ever saw Sven say "okay" to a normal polo shirt.
Did you lose some pounds? It seems so in the shots with light-blue polo shirts.
Hello Raphael, I’m wondering if you could do a guide to wearing shorts during the summer; in specific more towards a casual daily wear yet still something classy and becoming.
Thanks;
R.N.C
Are you reviewbruhs dad?
When will someone make a Lady’s Gazette channel? So many channels for women but none as specific and informative as this one.
I must disagree here, bu I think leather sandals in tropical or beach destinations are very appropriate.
6:58 Yikes, could have done without the visual.
nope.
You have to be one of the dorkiest looking guys I’ve seen…how do you give advice to clothing when you look shot with clothes.
Do a “goodfellas” style video with those double breasted suits 😏
the last bit of you walking on the beach was fun to watch. lovely new touch.
