What a horribly rude awakening! Though I had not used SS yet, I was planning to do so very soon. I checked SS website to see if my chosen fitness center accepted SS. I wound up on "Eligibility" part of SS and found that my own had "expired" for any SS benefit. Then I found this after some digging. United never sent me that letter in Dec. I shall now check out Aetna, Mutual of Omaha, Cygna, GPM, etc.

People never cease to amaze me. SilverSneakers! It’s like buying a house because you like the swingset in the backyard. Sheesh

For those who are going through SS withdrawal, there are you tube videos as well as their Facebook page that have exercise videos. Thanks for all the info that you provide, Chris!

My company switched from silver sneakers to silver and fit but it seems to be the same if not better.

hi Christopher…Do other regular (NOT advantage) supplements include Silver Sneakers?
I didn’t realize regular supplements included silver sneakers at all.. A friend of mine recently signed up for Medicare supp which she’ll get next year..she mentioned Silver Sneakers.. She didn’t mention the company / or plan letter she chose.. Is it always the rule that if SS is included its more expensive? Are they only dropping it from supplements and NOT Advantage plans?
Thanks so much for you reply,

Exactly. I did not find out that Silver Sneakers was being dropped until I received a letter from my health club – the YMCA – certainly not a fancy-schmancy place. No communication from AARP/UHC. Their letter was vague so I had to research to find out what was going on and that it was actually AARP /UHC that was the culprit. I now have to pay full membership, no discount. I originally signed up for AARP because we had no problems when my mother had it. But lately, even before this, AARP rates were skyrocketing. I was another who justified because of the SS benefit. Now, I WILL be dropping AARP/UHC. I have just started looking at other plans and expect the price differential will more than cover the Y membership. Shop around. It pays.

Very frustrating because I was told they do and now they don’t. I went to use and can’t. What a fraud.

The reason UHC is dropping Silver Sneakers is greed. They are starting their own version of Silver Sneakers under the Optum® Fitness Advantage branding where you, the senior, will only need to pay one half of the fitness center cost (it used to cost you nothing with Silver Sneakers). What is more disturbing is UHC is advertising this change as a good thing, allowing you to have more fitness options. What options, to pay more? And they want you, the senior, to go to fitness centers that are not participating and convince the fitness center to join UHC’s fitness network so you can pay half of what used to cost you nothing. That takes balls UHC in my opinion!

While this was all happening, AARP stood by and did nothing as I am sure they are getting a cut of the "profits" from this "new benefit" being offered by UHC. AARP is supposed to protect us seniors from these types of actions by unscrupulous companies, but I guess when money is involved, you make compromises and get in bed with anyone. Not the first time, however, and will not be the last. AARP has been caught many times with their hand in the cookie jar with the companies they endorse and who advertise in their publications while skirting government rules and regulations. They are not to be trusted to look out for the good of seniors. If not AARP, then who?

Gotta love people who pay extra for something they never use. I have always taken AARP with a grain of bullshit.
